Do You Believe in Man-Made Climate Change?

This week's media coverage has been a breath of fresh air although I do think it has only "picked" on the low hanging fruit and I suspect it's being driven by protagonists-with-media-friends attempting to oust Pachauri - I'm not really seeing much airtime given over to debating methodologies and counter-theories.

We know the formula: replace the head; maybe have an inquiry; concede a couple of lessons learnt; announce a tightening of the system; and move on, business as usual.

It reminds me of the war in Iraq, when £billions of war assets and 100's of thousands of men were parked in the desert, poised to strike, whilst we were still being told - even then - that no decision to invade had been made. We all know how the evidence stacked up then; and proving WMD is much simpler than proving MMGW.

We have our own local example of that.

Local developers are up in arms against the cabinet member on the local authority with reponsibility for housing. This is on two matters:
Over-charged s106 payments
Requirement that all new homes should be built to CoSH level 3 now rather than in 2012 (or whenever).

Councillor Law makes much of the importance of being "green". One local developer has taken time out to check what each Councillor drives (his office is just by the Council offices). Mr Law drives a BMW 7 series.

'or whenever' would be 'never'. The govt has done a u-turn on making CfSH mandatory. Level 3 is mandatory for publicly funded buildings - housing associations etc, but is not and will not at any time become a requirement for normal private developments on a national scale (except in Wales). They are hoping there will be voluntary marketed takeup of the scheme.
Stop me if this starts sounding familiar.

Which is unbelievably irritating as out of this entire 'energy training' shambles/mirage the only element that I was remotely interested in, and had the capacity to wake up my second brain cell would be the training for, and the carrying out of, CSH assessments. The rest of it is watered-down rubbish.

I hear even the muppets have turned down HEA training as its beneath them.

Sorry to say that this somewhat momentous u-turn had passed me by    . I knew about the failure to link extensions to improvement works under Building Regs. That was bad enough but this is a whole new ball-game. I need to know as currently doing all the prep work for our new house / workspace (outline application goes in this week :) ).

Can you refer me to the texts concerned please? And does that mean, as per Neil's e-mail, that new homes will not need to be assessed at all? Or does it mean that an assessment still needs to be carried out but it does not matter whether or not the building passes (a complete cop-out  )?

There aren't any texts concerned I'm afraid. They didn't announce it. Just removed the mandatory bits from all the CfSH literature. Building regs will tighten up in terms of emissions etc but that's it.

Back to the OP - the latest word now from the Met Office as reported by the BBC

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8550090.stm

"The study, which looks at research published since the IPCC's report, has found that changes in Arctic sea ice, atmospheric moisture, saltiness of parts of the Atlantic Ocean and temperature changes in the Antarctic are consistent with human influence on our climate."
